La vérité sur les spectacles «hors Broadway»

Une idée fausse très répandue chez les amateurs occasionnels de comédies musicales veut que les spectacles présentés hors Broadway soient moins prestigieux ou de moindre qualité que ceux présentés sur Broadway à New York.

En fait, l'appellation «hors Broadway» (Off-Broadway) n'a absolument rien à voir avec la qualité du spectacle. Celui-ci n'a pas été relégué au second plan ou à une rue moins importante. Cela signifie simplement que le spectacle est présenté dans une salle plus petite, pouvant accueillir entre 100 et 499 personnes. En comparaison, la plus grande salle de Broadway, le Gershwin Theatre, peut recevoir environ 2000 spectateurs. Les spectacles hors Broadway procurent une expérience beaucoup plus intime, ce qui peut être très avantageux pour certaines productions.

Voici quelques données intéressantes que vous ne savez peut-être pas concernant les spectacles hors Broadway:

  • Comme plusieurs spectacles de Broadway, certains sont présentés un nombre limité de fois, alors que d'autres restent sur la marquise pendant plus de dix ans. Le spectacle de percussion «Stomp», par exemple, fait trembler les planches du Orpheum Theatre depuis près de 20 ans.
  • Broadway n'est pas le seul endroit où voir des acteurs célèbres. Récemment, Travelzoo a mentionné des spectacles mettant en vedette Jenna Fischer (« The Office ») et Michael Urie (« Ugly Betty »).
  • Il se peut que votre salle de spectacle ne se trouve pas à proximité de la rue Broadway. Même si bon nombre de salles hors Broadway se trouvent dans le Theater District, vous en trouverez répandues aux quatre coins de Manhattan. Alors, veillez à respecter la règle d'or de tout bon amateur de théâtre: vérifiez l'adresse et l'heure de début et de votre spectacle, vérifiez une autre fois, puis une autre fois.
  • Plusieurs spectacles bien connus sur Broadway ont connu des débuts modestes dans des salles hors Broadway. Parmi ceux-ci, «Avenue Q», qui a remporté en 2004 le Tony de la meilleure comédie musicale, avant de revenir hors Broadway à la salle New World Stages, «Little Shop of Horrors» et «Rent».
