MUSIQUE - Si le rôle de Joe Jackson dans le bon développement de la carrière de ses enfants dans l'industrie musicale a toujours été salué, à l'inverse, les soupçons de mauvais traitements qui pèsent sur lui ont entaché sa réputation de père. Le patriarche n'a pas cherché à se protéger lors d'une rare apparition télévisée.

Dans l'émission du présentateur et polémiste britannique Piers Morgan, Piers Morgan Tonight diffusée par CNN le mercredi 30 janvier, le papa de MJ et des Jackson 5 a abordé les sujets les plus controversés sans tabous avant de partager son opinion sur la génération actuelle de parents qu'il juge beaucoup trop "tendre".

Voilà ce que pense Joe Jackson de la discipline dans la famille: "Oui, les parents sont trop doux. Une des raisons pour laquelle je dis ça, c'est parce qu'aujourd'hui, certains enfants en viennent à tuer leurs parents."

"Parlons de cette 'violence', de ces enfants battus. Pour moi, ça n'existe pas. Vous pouvez claquer un enfant ou le punir et il se souviendra de la cause qui vous a amené à le faire. Il se souviendra d'autant plus qu'il ne va jamais refaire la connerie initiale. Alors oui. C'est comme ça que j'étais."

À 84 ans, Joe Jackson n'a pas exprimé le moindre scrupule ou regret quant à ses strictes méthodes d'éducation. "Je devais être comme ça, parce qu'à l'époque c'était dur, et il y avait des gangs dans la région où l'on habitait. C'était à Gary dans l'Indiana. Je devais faire en sorte qu'ils ne se fourrent pas dans des situations compliquées ou des choses de ce genre."

"Je suis content d'avoir été dur. Regardez ce que ça a donné. J'ai réussi à faire des enfants que tout le monde a aimé et adulé dans le monde. Et ils ont toujours traité correctement en retour leurs congénères."

Une relation conflictuelle

Rétabli après quelques ennuis de santé, le père de Michael Jackson a une longue histoire de violence avec ses enfants et plus particulièrement Michael. Après avoir construit le début de sa carrière, Joe doit répondre aux rumeurs de mauvais traitements infligés à la star durant son enfance.

Pour J. Randy Taraborrelli, un des biographes du Roi de la Pop, plus MJ avait de succès, plus il tentait de s'affranchir de son père. Taraborrelli a longtemps soutenu que Joe Jackson se comportait en tyran et validait les accusations de violence à son encontre.

Joe Jackson l'a toujours réfuté: "je ne l'ai jamais battu. Je l'ai déjà frappé avec un bâton ou une ceinture mais jamais je ne l'ai battu." Même après la mort de Michael Jackson, leur relation qui semblait plus apaisée reste ambiguë. Joe n'était pas présent dans le testament final pour la gestion de la marque MJ et il a même profité d'une des conférences de presse concernant la mort de son fils pour tenter de vendre une nouvelle entreprise musicale.
