ATLANTA - Tassez-vous, Joe Montana et Steve Young. Colin Kaepernick est en train de mener un nouveau groupe de 49ers au Super Bowl.

Frank Gore a inscrit deux touchés au sol en deuxième demie et les 49ers de San Francisco ont réussi à combler un déficit de 17-0 pour vaincre les Falcons d'Atlanta 28-24 en finale de la Nationale, dimanche.

«Je dois lever mon chapeau aux Falcons. Ils ont travaillé fort. Ils possèdent une excellente équipe, a déclaré Gore. Mais nous avons vraiment bataillé. Nous avons livré une bataille et nous méritions la victoire.»

Aidé par sa défensive lors des dernières minutes de la rencontre, Kaepernick n'a pas présenté des statistiques aussi impressionnantes que lors des demi-finales d'association contre les Packers de Green Bay, mais a livré une assez bonne performance pour justifier la décision de l'entraîneur Jim Harbaugh de garder Alex Smith sur le banc et donner le décpart au jeune quart.

San Francisco (13-4-1) affrontera donc dans deux semaines l'équipe qui remportera la finale de l'Américaine entre les Patriots de la Nouvelle-Angleterre et les Ravens de Baltimore. Les 49ers tenteront de rejoindre les Steelers de Pittsburgh comme seules formations à avoir gagné le Super Bowl à six reprises.

«C'est pour cette raison qu'on joue. C'est précisément pour ce moment, a mentionné l'ailier rapproché des 49ers Vernon Davis. On travaille très fort toute l'année pour espérer avoir la chance de prendre part au Super Bowl.»

Montana a aidé les 49ers à remporter le Super Bowl à quatre reprises, tandis que Young les a menés à la conquête de leur cinquième. Ce sera maintenant à Kaepernick d'aller chercher le sixième, alors que San Francisco participera au match ultime pour la première fois depuis 1995.

Les Falcons (14-4) ont bien tenté une toute dernière séquence à l'attaque en fin de match, mais la passe de Matt Ryan vers Roddy White sur un quatrième essai alors qu'il restait 1:13 à faire au quatrième quart a été touchée par le secondeur des 49ers NaVorro Bowman.

«On n'a pas complété les jeux quand on avait des opportunités de le faire, a indiqué l'entraîneur des Falcons Mike Smith. Il y a cinq ou six jeux, comme dans la plupart des matchs âprement disputés, qui ont fait la différence. Le momentum a changé de côté à plusieurs reprises, et au final ils [les 49ers] ont fait plus de jeux que nous.»

La victoire est encore plus significative pour les 49ers cette année, eux s'étaient inclinés au terme d'un match enlevant contre les Giants de New York la saison dernière en pareilles circonstances.

Les 49ers ont réussi la plus grande remontée de l'histoire de la NFL en finale de la Nationale. L'ancien record dans la Nationale était de 13 points — lors de la victoire des Falcons face aux Vikings du Minnesota en 1999, qui avait permis à Atlanta de remporter ce qui demeure aujourd'hui le seul Super Bowl de son histoire.

Dans l'Américaine, le record est de 18 points et est survenu lorsque les Colts d'Indianapolis sont venus de l'arrière pour vaincre les Patriots en 2007.
