VATICAN, État de la Cité du Vatican - Le pape Benoit XVI a accordé son pardon samedi à son ancien majordome Paolo Gabriele, qui a été condamné en octobre dernier pour avoir volé des documents secrets du Vatican, dans ce qui a été appelé «Vatileaks».

Le Saint-Père a eu une rencontre d'une quinzaine de minutes avec son ancien aide dans la cellule du poste de police où il était détenu à Rome, pour une sentence de 18 mois. Benoit XVI l'a gracié, et Gabriele a aussitôt été libéré.

Il devait retourner à son appartement du Vatican où il vit avec son épouse et leurs trois enfants.

Ce pardon pontifical met fin à un chapitre embarassant et douloureux pour le Vatican. Paolo Gabriele a été inculpé pour avoir dérobé puis photocopié différents écrits exposant au grand jour des luttes de pouvoir sans merci au Vatican, mais aussi des faits de corruption présumés au plus haut niveau du Saint-Siège.
