PROCÈS- C'est la septième fois que Mark Chapman demande sa mise en liberté. Aujourd'hui âgé de 57 ans, l'assassin de John Lennon espère un jour sortir de derrière les barreaux.

Le verdict de l'audience, qui doit débuter dans les prochains jours, sera rendu public avant la fin de la semaine. Mais il y a peu de chance pour que Mark Chapman voie sa demande de mise en liberté aboutir. Incarcéré dans la prison de haute sécurité de Wende, à Alden, dans l'Etat de New York, depuis qu'il a assassiné John Lennon de cinq balles en 1980, l'homme a déjà fait six demandes, toutes rejetées.

Condamné à la perpétuité avec une peine incompressible de 20 ans, Mark Chapman a le droit de réclamer sa liberté conditionnelle depuis 2000. Une demande qu'il ne manque pas de faire tous les deux ans. Yoko Ono, la veuve de John Lennon, a fait savoir dès 2000 qu'elle s'opposait fermement à la mise en liberté de l'homme, craignant pour sa propre sécurité.

Mark Chapman avait tenté de justifier son geste, expliquant avoir tué l'ex chanteur des Beatles dans l'espoir "de devenir quelqu'un".

"Je n'y voyais pas clair. J'ai pris une terrible décision en réduisant la vie d'un autre être humain pour des raisons purement égoïstes. Je pensais qu'en tuant John Lennon je deviendrais quelqu'un, mais à la place de cela je suis devenu un tueur et les tueurs ne sont pas des gens."
