Dr. Geoff D. Porter is the founder and managing director of North Africa Risk Consulting, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in political and security risk in North Africa. North Africa Risk Consulting’s clients include multinational corporations as well as US government agencies. Prior to establishing North Africa Risk Consulting, Dr. Porter was the Director for Middle East and Africa at a political risk consulting firm. Earlier in his career Dr. Porter was a professor of Middle East and North Africa History. Dr. Porter’s focus at North Africa Risk Consulting is understanding the political contexts in Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia and analyzing their impacts on the investment environments.

Dr. Porter is fluent in Arabic (including Modern Standard Arabic and North African dialect) and French. His translations from Arabic have appeared in The New York Times Op-Ed page. In addition, he has published regularly in The New York Times and the Daily Star (Lebanon), and has appeared on US and foreign media to provide commentary on events unfolding in North Africa. Dr. Porter also speaks regularly at conferences in the US and overseas.

Analyse: les violences salafistes en Libye

Au début de la révolution en Libye, on s'est demandé si Al-Qaïda au Maghreb islamique (AQMI), tirerait avantage de l'anarchie du pays. Il apparaîtclairement qu'il y a au moins deux groupes salafistes radicaux qui en partagent au moins l'idéologie jihadiste salafiste. Le premier, qui a conduit les attaques contre le consulat américain en juin, s'appelle la Brigade pour la libération du prisonnier Sheikh Omar Abdulrahman, en référence au cerveau présumé des bombes du sous-sol du World Trade Center en 1993. Le second groupe se nomme Ansar al-Sharia, soit "les vainqueurs de la Charia".
