Il y a 74 ans aujourd'hui, l'invasion de l'Europe par les Alliés, qui entraînerait la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et la défaite du nazisme, débutait sur les plages de Normandie en France.

Aujourd'hui, ces mêmes étendues de sable accueillent des baigneurs et des touristes et, mis à part un étrange bunker, il reste peu de preuves sur les 156 000 soldats qui ont participé à l'opération Overlord, la plus grande opération maritime de l'histoire.

Le premier ministre Winston Churchill l'a décrite comme: "Sans doute la plus compliquée et la plus difficile qui ait jamais eu lieu".

Quelque 10 000 hommes alliés ont été tués ou blessés le premier jour.
