COLUMBIA, S.C. — L'homme accusé d'avoir tué neuf paroissiens noirs dans une église de la Caroline du Sud fera face à une accusation fédérale de crime haineux, a indiqué un responsable mercredi.

Ce responsable proche de l'enquête a déclaré à l'Associated Press qu'un grand jury déposerait sous peu une accusation de crime haineux contre Dylann Roof, âgé de 21 ans. La source a réclamé l'anonymat parce que l'acte d'accusation n'a pas encore été déposé.

Cette décision était attendue depuis l'arrestation de Dylann Roof après la fusillade du 17 juin à l'église Emanuel AME de Charleston.

Des responsables fédéraux avaient précédemment indiqué que les circonstances de la tuerie répondaient à la définition juridique d'un crime haineux.

Des photos publiées sur Internet montrent le suspect, qui est Blanc, brandissant des drapeaux confédérés. Il aurait également écrit un manifeste appelant à la violence raciale.

Dylann Roof fait déjà face à plusieurs accusations, dont neuf chefs de meurtre. Les procureurs n'ont pas encore dit s'ils réclameraient la peine de mort.
