LE CAIRE, Égypte - L'ancien chef de l'armée égyptienne affirme qu'il a décidé de se porter candidat à la présidence à cause des «menaces» auxquelles le pays est confronté.

Le général Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi a fait cette déclaration lundi soir lors de la première entrevue télévisée de sa campagne, diffusée sur une chaîne de télévision publique égyptienne.

L'été dernier, après la destitution par l'armée du président islamiste Mohammed Morsi, le premier président démocratiquement élu de l'Égypte, le général avait indiqué qu'il n'avait pas d'aspirations politiques.

Interrogé sur ce revirement, M. El-Sissi a affirmé lundi qu'il avait décidé de se présenter «à cause des menaces intérieures et extérieures auxquelles l'Égypte fait face», en ajoutant qu'il n'était pas possible pour lui «d'abandonner le peuple».

Le général El-Sissi est considéré comme le vainqueur assuré de l'élection présidentielle des 26 et 27 mai en Égypte.
