Avant même que la 56e cérémonie des Grammy Awards débute officiellement, plusieurs prix ont été remis dans différents genres musicaux. Au total, 82 prix sont remis lors des Grammys, mais seules les principales catégories ont été présentées à la télévision.
Le duo Daft Punk a remporté les trophées les plus prestigieux de la soirée, en s'imposant notamment dans les catégories reines de meilleur enregistrement et meilleur album de l'année pour leur opus Random Access Memories.
L'autre grand gagnant de la soirée est le duo rap Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, qui a raflé quatre statuettes: trois de rap (interprétation, chanson et album pour The Heist) et révélation de l'année. La Néo-Zélandaise Lorde est quant à elle repartie avec les trophées de meilleure chanson de l'année et meilleure interprétation pop pour son titre Royals.
Jay Z, qui dominait les nominations (9 catégories) est reparti avec le prix de la meilleure collaboration rap pour sa pièce Holy Grail, où l'on entend également la voix de Justin Timberlake.
