SEPT-ILES, Qc - Un déversement de quelque 450 000 litres de mazout lourd s'est produit dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche à l'usine de bouletage de Cliffs Ressources naturelles située à Sept-Îles sur la Côte-Nord.

Guy Desbiens, d'Urgence-Environnement, assure que la majeure partie du mazout s'est déversée à l'intérieur d'un bassin de rétention.

Mais environ 1000 litres d'hydrocarbures se sont retrouvés dans le fleuve Saint-Laurent. Des intervenants installaient, dimanche après-midi, des estacades pour confiner le produit. L'opération de pompage pourra ensuite débuter et devrait s'échelonner sur plusieurs jours.

Selon les premières informations, le déversement se serait produit lors du transfert du mazout d'un réservoir à un autre.

M. Desbiens estime que ce déversement ne devrait causer que peu d'impacts sur l'environnement.
