MONTRÉAL - Les cardinaux se rencontreront à compter de lundi, au Vatican, pour déterminer la date et le processus entourant le conclave au cours duquel le successeur du pape démissionnaire Benoît XVI sera choisi.

Benoît XVI est officiellement parti à la retraite jeudi soir dernier.

C’est le doyen du Collège des cardinaux, Monseigneur Angelo Sodano, qui a convoqué tous ses confrères à cette première réunion. Durant la semaine, plusieurs autres rencontres seront tenues.

L’ancien archevêque de Montréal, Monseigneur Jean-Claude Turcotte, s’attend à ce que le conclave ait lieu avant le début de la Semaine sainte, afin que le nouveau pape puisse participer à toutes les cérémonies de Pâques.

Quelque 115 cardinaux seront appelés à élire le 266e pape.

Parmi les «papabili» circulent les noms du Québécois Marc Ouellet, de l'Italien Angelo Scola, du Brésilien Odilo Scherer, du Ghanéen Peter Turkson et du Philippin Luis Antonio Tagle, entre autres.
