La Montréalaise Shelley Rothman Banhaim est inquiète pour son frère Howie Haïm Rothman, grièvement blessé lors de l'attaque contre une synagogue à Jérusalem. Les assaillants ont tué trois Américains et un Britannique avant d'être abattus par la police.
« Sa situation est très grave, critique même. Il a subi trois opérations aujourd'hui sur la tête, l'œil et les bras. Il a été attaqué à coups de couteau. Il est maintenant dans un coma artificiel pour au moins deux, trois jours », dit-elle.

Howie Haïm Rothman, un Canadien originaire de Toronto, est père de 10 enfants. Âgé de 54 ans, il vit à Jérusalem depuis une trentaine d'années. Il se trouvait à l'intérieur de la synagogue qui a été prise d'assaut par deux Palestiniens.
Pour Shelley Rothman Banhaim, la recrudescence de la violence en Israël est liée à l'offensive belliqueuse du groupe armé État islamique (EI). Elle fait remarquer que « l'État islamique a dit aux gens qui le suivent : ''si vous voyez des gens en uniforme, un soldat, essayez de le tuer''. Et en Israël, les terroristes palestiniens ont reçu l'incitation contre les juifs : ''si vous avez une voiture, utilisez-la pour tuer les juifs, si vous avez un couteau, utilisez-le pour tuer un juif'' ».
Le premier ministre canadien Stephen Harper a condamné un « acte terroriste barbare », ajoutant que ses « pensées accompagnent les Israéliens ».
L'attentat contre la synagogue intervient au lendemain de la mort d'un chauffeur de bus palestinien, retrouvé pendu dans son dépôt de Jérusalem-Ouest. Les Palestiniens ont dénoncé un « crime raciste », alors que les autorités israéliennes ont conclu au suicide.

Une flambée de violence a suivi la mort, début juillet, d'un adolescent palestinien qui aurait été brûlé vif par des extrémistes juifs de Jérusalem-Est, la partie palestinienne annexée et occupée par Israël.
Il y a près d'un mois, un Palestinien a jeté sa voiture sur un arrêt du tramway, tuant un nourisson. Deux autres attentats à la voiture bélier ont ensanglanté Jérusalem et la Cisjordanie occupée, avant une série d'attaques au couteau à Tel-Aviv.
