PÉKIN, Chine - Xi Jinping a été élu président de la Chine par le parlement jeudi.

Il s'agit du troisième et dernier titre que détenait son prédécesseur Hu Jintao.

Xi Jinping devra bien manoeuvrer afin d'obtenir le support d'une population qui exige de plus en plus des changements.

Cette élection était prévue depuis sa nomination au poste de secrétaire général du Parti communiste (PCC) en novembre dernier.

Le président Xi devra notamment faire sa place au sein des membres influents du PCC, un parti souvent divisé pour des raisons idéologiques, des intérêts financiers.

Après l'annonce des résultats, Xi Jinping a salué les délégués et s'est tourné vers l'ex-président Jintao, qui était assis à sa droite, et les deux hommes se sont serrés la main.

Li Yuanchao, un allié de Hu Jintao durant des décennies, a été nommé vice-président.
