Bottom-trawl fisheries are often criticized for their environmental impact. I've been among the vocal critics. But now, thanks to growing consumer demand for sustainable seafood and a willingness of industry and environmental organizations to work together, one fishery is set to improve.

J'ai eu la chance de visiter les îles de la Madeleine, au cœur du golfe du Saint-Laurent, au printemps 2011 avec mon ami George Stroumboulopoulos. Nous filmions un segment web visant à sensibiliser le public sur l'importance du golfe du Saint-Laurent ainsi que sur les risques découlant du forage pétrolier et gazier. Il y a eu beaucoup de bruit autour du développement potentiel de la filière pétrolière et gazière dans le golfe du Saint-Laurent, surtout en ce qui concerne un projet de forage exploratoire au gisement potentiel Old Harry. Les enjeux sont élevés.

Chers amis, certains parmi vous ont eu vent par les médias de ma décision de m'écarter du Conseil d'administration de la Fondation David Suzuki. Je suis parvenu à un tournant de ma vie où j'aimerais me considérer comme un aîné. Je veux pouvoir m'exprimer librement sans craindre que mes propos soient jugés comme trop politiques et qu'ils nuisent à cette organisation qui m'est si chère.

Do You Suffer From "Plant Blindness"?

Show someone a photo of a lush forest with a grizzly bear and ask what's in the picture. Most will answer, "a bear." Add a spotted owl to the scene, and the response might become, "a grizzly bear under an owl." What you are unlikely to hear is a description of the flora accompanying the charismatic fauna.

Environmental Rules Should Be Better, Not Easier

Recent federal budget changes to the environmental review process favour industry over the environment. Besides putting the environment and the human health that depends on it at risk, these changes to policy and regulation could actually make review processes more inefficient and time-consuming.
