Three disturbing facts from this week's news cycle: Larry Craig likes to take a "wide stance" when, depending on whose version you believe, either doing his business or looking to get busy; Katrina fall guy Michael Brown now works in the private sector as a disaster response advisor (Best advice: "Don't do what I did!"); and the Government Accountability Office has so little faith in the honesty of the Bush administration, it felt the need to leak its negative assessment of progress in Iraq to prevent it from being watered down by the White House. In my mind, these stories have all blended together, with President Bush calling a news conference to announce: "Heck of a blow job, Craigie."

Since the news about Craig broke, the media focus has been on his sexual perversions -- it's time to turn the spotlight on the perverted priorities of America's law enforcement community.

For George Bush, some memes never get old. Here we are on the cusp of the sixth anniversary of 9/11, and the president is still shamelessly straining to make the connection between the war in Iraq and 9/11. Responding to Osama bin Laden's latest taped diatribe, Bush seized on the terrorist's mention of Iraq, saying: "If al-Qaeda bothers to mention Iraq, it's because they want to achieve their objectives in Iraq, which is to drive us out." Talk about chutzpah: Bush falsely used bin Laden as a pretense for starting the war in Iraq and is now using him again as a false pretense for staying the disastrous course. Who needs the Petraeus report when you have the bin Laden retort? Play it again, George.

On the eve of the Petraeus report, the White House has cranked up its spin machine, and the Democrats are falling into their default duck-and-cover mode.

Like Pontius Pilate washing his hands of responsibility, too many in the Washington press corps want to pretend they are leaving the question of "what is truth" to their readers -- refusing to admit that there is even such a thing as truth.

This was quite a week for bad behavior. Bill Belichick was caught cheating (sorry, I mean, misinterpreting the rules); Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell was caught lying to Congress (sorry, I mean, overstating the role warrantless eavesdropping played in thwarting a major terror plot); and OJ Simpson reportedly robbed a man at gunpoint. Over sports memorabilia. Then there was Tony Snow, who ended his truth-challenged run as press secretary by claiming, when asked about the possibility of a long term US military presence in Iraq, "Yeah, well, the Iraqis want that." Yeah, well, actually they don't. A new poll shows that 79 percent of Iraqis oppose our being there, and 57 percent approve of attacks against US troops. So, tragically, what the majority of Iraqis actually want is more dead American soldiers.

Was the MoveOn ad blunt? Yes. Did it go for the jugular? No doubt. But while the way it chose to make its points can be debated, the accuracy of those points cannot.
