Distracted: a Powerful New Play Takes on Our "Pill for Every Ill" Culture

| Publication 04.02.2007

It's a stinging indictment of our pill-for-every-ill culture, in which parents of hyperactive children find themselves being pressured -- sometimes subtly, sometimes overtly -- by doctors, teachers, and school administrators to medicate their kids.

You know it's been a strange week when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the most reasonable guy in the room. But while the president of Iran was preaching forgiveness and making the diplomatic gesture of releasing the 15 British sailors, the president of the United States was childishly, churlishly, and undiplomatically giving Congress, the Constitution, and the concept of advice and consent the finger with his recess appointments of Andrew Biggs, Susan Dudley, and Swift Boat donor Sam Fox. No word on whether Bush held his breath and stomped his feet while sneaking the trio in the administration's backdoor. Meanwhile, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter... But I can't. Unfortunately, Mitt Romney, looking to further establish his conservative bona fides, just shot the Easter Bunny.

Allow me to interrupt the Democratic victory parade for a moment to point out that the raising of political money isn't the whole story. It's what happens afterwards that should command our attention.

This week gave us Karl Rove's missing email, Alberto Gonzales' subpoena, Larry Birkhead's victorious DNA, the Green Zone bombing of the Iraqi parliament, the death of Kurt Vonnegut, and the long overdue disgracing of Paul Wolfowitz (though, ironically, not because of his deceptions about the war but because of his deceptions about his mistress). But the story that really struck a nerve with our HuffPost bloggers was the Imus imbroglio. Don't miss the Imus takes of Alec Baldwin, Jon Landau, Marty Kaplan, Bob Cesca, Ken Levine, Harry Shearer, Nina Burleigh, Gabriel Delahaye, Trey Ellis, Al Eisele, Patricia Zohn, Earl Ofari Hutchinson, Taylor Marsh, David Bromwich, Joseph A. This week Gonzales wavered, Wolfowitz teetered, McCain channeled Sanjaya, and a 3-mile long, 12-foot high concrete wall going up between Sunni and Shiite neighborhoods in northern Baghdad revealed the latest Bush plan for Iraq: peace through segregation ("We will be greeted as liberators East Germans!") But, as you would expect, the shootings at Virginia Tech dominated our blog. This week saw the regeneration of the Democrats' bicameral backbone, with the historic passage of legislation setting a deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq. They are going to need every freshly-fortified vertebra as the president prepares to flex his veto power -- a move he's convinced will give him the upper hand in negotiations due to what an administration official describes as "a segmented market" among Democrats. Of course, this is the same president who interpreted the 2006 election as a mandate to escalate our involvement in Iraq. Speaking of "segmented markets," I can't wait to catch George Tenet on 60 Minutes tonight. Judging by his excerpts, his j'accuse of Cheney will be, all together now: a slam dunk.
