Au moins 23 personnes auraient perdu la vie quand un incendie a ravagé une prison éthiopienne pendant la fin de semaine, selon les médias locaux.

La prison de Kilinto, à l'extérieur de la capitale, accueille notamment des journalistes et des dissidents.

La presse rapporte que 21 prisonniers ont été tués lors de la bousculade qui a éclaté ou ont été asphyxiés par la fumée. Deux autres ont été abattus en tentant de s'enfuir.

Des militants éthiopiens ont été les premiers à s'inquiéter de l'incendie samedi, en évoquant une vingtaine de morts.

Le gouvernement faisait tout d'abord état d'une seule victime.

Le plus récent communiqué gouvernemental ne précise pas comment les flammes ont éclaté. Une enquête a été ouverte.
