Le règne de l'Espagne est terminé. Quatre ans après le titre décroché en 2010, la Roja a été éliminée du Mondial-2014 au Brésil, après sa défaite (2-0) face au Chili, premier qualifié pour les huitièmes de finale en compagnie des Pays-Bas.

Hégémonique depuis 2008 (double championne d'Europe et championne du monde), l'Espagne rejoint le Brésil de 1966, la France de 2002 et l'Italie de 2010, tenants du titre éliminés dès le premier tour d'un Mondial.

Le sélectionneur Vicente Del Bosque avait pourtant tenté un pari, en laissant deux de ses cadres, les Barcelonais Xavi et Piqué sur le banc, et en maintenant Iker Casillas dans les buts, malgré sa production catastrophique lors de la déroute face aux Pays-Bas (5-1). Cautère sur une jambe de bois... La domination chilienne a été totale. Equipe vieillissante, joueurs cadres fragilisés, saison interminable pour certains, jeu à base de passes courtes dépassé... Les raisons ne manquent pas pour tenter d'expliquer cette élimination prématurée. Et les cinq jours qui séparent la Roja de son ultime match sans enjeu face à l'Australie, éliminée aussi, le 23 juin à Curitiba, à proximité du camp de base, vont paraître bien longs aux joueurs, habitués à jouer les premiers rôles.

Ces cent-vingt heures permettront peut-être au sélectionneur Vicente Del Bosque d'accélérer la transition vers le prochain objectif (l'Euro-2016) en offrant du temps de jeu et de l'expérience à ceux qui piaffent sur le banc depuis tant d'années. A moins qu'il ne choisisse d'offrir un dernier bal à ses glorieux soldats.

A l'inverse, les Pays-Bas et le Chili peuvent eux déjà envisager les huitièmes de finale avec beaucoup d'appétit. Leur duel du 23 juin sera quand même pimenté par un bel enjeu: le vainqueur (ou les Pays-Bas en cas de match nul) évitera le Brésil en huitième de finale.

Les Pays-Bas accrochés

Face à l'Espagne, comme face à l'Australie (3-1), les Chiliens ont montré qu'ils avaient de solides arguments, notamment un dispositif bien en place, au service de brillantes individualités comme Vidal, Isla ou Vargas.

Ils peuvent aussi compter sur une colonie impressionnante de supporters passionnés, qui pour certains ont parcouru 4.500 km et franchi la Cordillère des Andes pour venir pousser derrière "l'autre" Roja. L'enthousiasme a même débordé, puisqu'une centaine d'entre eux, faute de billet, ont tenté de forcer les portes du Maracana avant le coup d'envoi. Mais ils ont été arrêtés.

Souverains face aux Espagnols le 13 juin, les Néerlandais ont eux rencontré d'énormes difficultés pour battre l'Australie, confortant l'idée que leur principal adversaire est peut-être... eux-mêmes, tant cette équipe cultive historiquement une certaine propension à imploser sous le poids des ego.

Dans un chassé-croisé superbe, ponctué notamment par un but exceptionnel de l'Australien Cahill, les Pays-Bas ont montré qu'ils peuvent compter sur un trio offensif de classe mondiale (Robben, Sneidjer, van Persie). Mais aussi que la défense constitue leur gros point faible.

Enfin, le Mondial retourne dans la moiteur tropicale de Manaus, à quatre heures d'avion et 2850 km de Rio. Après l'Angleterre et l'Italie, le 14 juin, ce sont la Croatie et le Cameroun qui se frottent (22h00 GMT) aux conditions de jeu particulières à proximité de la jungle amazonienne (30°c et taux d'humidité voisin de 80%).

Coup de chaud interdit car le perdant sera éliminé de la course aux huitièmes de finale et réduit au rôle d'arbitre lors des derniers matches de la première phase, le 23 juin.
