L'armée américaine a ouvert une enquête lundi sur les conditions de la capture en Afghanistan en 2009 du sergent Bowe Bergdahl, qui a été libéré en mai dernier.

L'enquête sera dirigée par le général Kenneth Dahl. Il aura pour mandat de se pencher « sur les faits et circonstances entourant la disparition et la capture du sergent Bowe Bergdahl du poste de combat avancé de Mest-Lalak, dans la province de Paktika ».

Les enquêteurs auront accès au rapport classifié réalisé peu après sa capture sur les circonstances entourant sa disparition. Selon des fuites de responsables américains, un rapport indique que Bowe Bergdahl aurait volontairement abandonné son poste. D'anciens membres de son unité l'accusent carrément de désertion.

Après sa libération, le sergent Bergdahl avait affirmé qu'il avait été torturé et emprisonné dans une cage par ses ravisseurs après avoir tenté de s'échapper.

Rapatrié vendredi aux États-Unis où il est hospitalisé, le sergent de 28 ans avait été, qui étaient détenus sur la base américaine de Guantanamo, à Cuba.

Le sergent Bergdahl ne sera pas entendu par les enquêteurs tant que son « processus de réintégration » dans l'armée ne sera pas achevé.

L'affaire a fait des remous jusqu'à la Maison-Blanche, mettant dans l'embarras le président Barack Obama, qui est accusé d'avoir omis d'informer le Congrès à temps et d'avoir négocié avec des preneurs d'otages.
