Des procureurs ont déposé des accusations de meurtre prémédité, mardi, contre trois adolescents après que la police eut affirmé qu'ils avaient ciblé un joueur de baseball australien alors qu'il effectuait son jogging sur la route, et l'avaient abattu d'une balle dans le dos pour se désennuyer lors d'une journée d'été en Oklahoma.

Christopher Lane, âgé de 22 ans et originaire de Melbourne, est mort vendredi le long d'une route du nord de la ville de Duncan. Deux adolescents, respectivement âgés de 15 et 16 ans, ont été accusés de meurtre prémédité et gardé en détention sans possibilité de libération sous caution.

Un troisième adolescent, âgé de 17 ans, a été accusé de complicité après les faits. Il a déclaré en cour que c'est lui qui avait appuyé sur la détente, mais le juge lui a demandé de garder le silence, et a souligné que ce n'était pas le moment de discuter des faits liés à l'affaire.

La caution de ce troisième adolescent a été établie à 1 million de dollars américains.

Le chef de la police, Dan Ford, a dit que les garçons avaient le plus simple des motifs. Il a expliqué, lors d'une série d'entrevues, que l'adolescent de 17 ans avait mentionné aux policiers que les trois s'ennuyaient et avaient tué M. Lane « pour le plaisir ».

Pendant ce temps, famille et amis sur deux continents ont pleuré Christopher Lane, qui a laissé tomber une carrière dans le football australien afin de réaliser son rêve de jouer au baseball, un sport américain.

Sa copine a déposé, les larmes aux yeux, une croix devant un mémorial dressé à Duncan, tandis que de l'autre côté de la planète, un autre mémorial était installé sur le marbre qu'il a protégé en tant que receveur dans son équipe à Melbourne.

« Nous pensons que nous allons le laisser là, a dit Sarah Harper alors qu'elle visitait le mémorial. Il s'agit du dernier endroit où il s'est trouvé. »
