  • Carole King "You've Got A Friend"

A number one hit and one of the most popular songs ever recorded about friendship, Carole King says the feel-good song about helping someone when they're down and troubled wasn't about any one person in particular. But she did loan it to her friend Jame Taylor, whose version went all the way to number one.

  • White Stripes "We're Going To Be Friends"

One of the White Stripes' most iconic songs, this was used in the opening credits of nerd-friend comedy "Napoleon Dynamite." A narrative story, this one's about walking to school with a pal and maybe-crush named Suzy Lee.

  • Justice "We Are Your Friends"

This French band's redo of Simian's "Never Be Alone" became a rather uncomplicated smash hit dance in 2004. The lines "Because we are your friends/You'll never be alone again," repeated over and over, still feel celebratory whenever you hear them.

  • Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends"

One of the signature songs from The Beatles' 1967 "Sgt. Pepper" album, this one's about falling back to the safe haven of friendship while looking for love.

  • Queen "You're My Best Friend"

This feel-good single from Queen's 1976 album "A Night At The Opera" was written by bassist John Deacon about his wife Veronica Tetzlaff. The two have six children together.

  • Biz Markie "Just A Friend"

Outwardly a goofy novelty rap track with off-key singing, this 1989 single actually tells a sad tale about misplaced love and deception. Life lesson: If she says he's "just a friend" she might lying.

  • Lily Allen "Friend Of Mine"

In the world of mercurial friendships, few rank as caustic as the one outlined in this song from Lily Allen's 2006 album "Alright, Still." In the song Allen cuttingly asks her soon-to-be-former friend "Have you got no self-respect?" Presumably, the answer is no.

  • Dandy Warhols "We Used To Be Friends"

The Dandy Warhols had a whole movie called "Dig!" documenting their toxic friendship with psych rockers the Brian Jonestown Massacre so fractured friendships are particularly familiar to the group. Oh, and this is also the pitch-perfect theme song to high school noir "Veronica Mars."

  • Queens Of The Stone Age "Fairweather Friends"

This compelling track from QOSTA's new album "... Like Clockwork" appears to document the ill effects gossips and titular fairweather friends can have on relationships. Josh Homme's advice: "Don't let them in your head." This is probably a sound strategy.

  • The Streets "We Can Never Be Friends"

An unlikely ballad of sorts from rapper Mike Skinner's 2011 album "Computers And Blues," tracks the uncomfortable end to a romantic relationship. While negotiating the terms of their breakup Skinner is unequivocal, saying "We reached the end/You'll never see me again."

  • Morrissey "There Is A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends"

Notable sourpuss Morrissey has actually written a few pro-friendship songs over the years. Like this one from 1991 album "Kill Uncle" where he states with a certain amount of glee that he and his friends will all go to hell together.

  • Morrissey "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful"

Of course, notable sourpuss Morrissey has written far MORE songs about horrible friendship. Like this 1992 single from comeback album "Your Arsenal" where the Moz rather jealously lashes out at the other bands from the then-red hot Manchester music scene.

  • Andrew Gold "Thank You For Being A Friend"

Though best known (in re-recorded form) as the theme to "Golden Girls," late singer-songwriter Andrew Gold's full-length version cracked the top 25 back in 1978.
