Le chef de la police de Toronto, Bill Blair, refuse d'écarter un possible lien entre le maire Rob Ford et une vaste opération policière. Le chef Blair a fait le point jeudi midi sur les 39 perquisitions qui avaient eu lieu en matinée dans la région de Toronto et ailleurs au pays.

Le chef Blair a expliqué qu'il risquerait de mettre en péril la cause en cour s'il divulgait plus d'information.

Bilan de l'opération :
- 43 personnes arrêtées, dont 19 Torontois et 9 résidents de la région de Windsor
- Armes à feu et drogues saisies, dont de la cocaïne
- 572 000 $ en argent saisis

Selon Bill Blair, d'autres arrestations devraient avoir lieu prochainement. La police de Toronto rencontrera de nouveau la presse vendredi.

Un des endroits ciblés par les perquisitions est un immeuble torontois qui avait fait les manchettes, parce qu'y aurait été cachée une présumée vidéo d'un homme ressemblant au maire Rob Ford en train de fumer ce qui semblait être du crack.

La vidéo était déjà connue
Selon CTV, la vidéo montrant le maire Rob Ford fumant du crack faisait l'objet d'une enquête policière avant même qu'elle ne soit mentionnée dans les médias. Des conversations faisant référence à la vidéo auraient été captées grâce à l'écoute électronique.

Le maire pas au courant

Le maire Ford a affirmé à son arrivée à l'hôtel de ville, jeudi matin, qu'il n'avait aucune idée de ce qui s'était passé, expliquant que son « câble était en panne » et que le chef de police ne l'avait pas informé à l'avance de la tenue de la vaste opération. Il a ensuite précisé que son bureau avait été avisé.

En réponse à la question d'une journaliste qui lui a demandé s'il était lui-même l'objet de l'enquête, il a répondu du tac au tac que la « police peut bien enquêter sur moi si elle le veut ». Le maire a ajouté qu'il n'avait rien fait de mal.

Le Toronto Star et le site américain Gawker ont affirmé le mois dernier avoir vu une vidéo montrant un homme qui avait l'air du maire en train d'inhaler ce qui semblait être du crack, un dérivé de la cocaïne. Radio-Canada n'a pas pu visionner l'enregistrement et ne peut donc pas vérifier son authenticité. Le maire a nié prendre du crack. Il a aussi affirmé que ladite vidéo n'existait pas.

Longue enquête

Le reporter de la CBC Trevor Dunn raconte que la perquisition au 320, rue Dixon, dans le nord-ouest de Toronto, a commencé peu avant 5 h. Des dizaines d'agents s'étaient rassemblés près de l'immeuble pour ensuite se précipiter à l'intérieur.

« Il y a eu un énorme vacarme lié possiblement à l'utilisation de grenades neutralisantes ou aux portes enfoncées par les policiers. » — Trevor Dunn, reporter de la CBC

Selon la police de Toronto, la rafle de jeudi matin visait à s'attaquer au trafic de drogue et aux gangs de rue. C'était le résultat d'une enquête appelée Project Traveller qui a débuté en juin 2012.

Selon une copie d'un mandat de perquisition obtenue par la CBC, les policiers étaient à la recherche notamment de téléphones cellulaires, d'ordinateurs portables et d'autres appareils électroniques appartenant aux membres des gangs Dixon City Bloods, Dixon Crew et Dixon Blood City.

Plusieurs dizaines de policiers, notamment des unités tactiques, ont participé à l'opération. Des corps policiers des régions d'Edmonton, de Peel, de Halton et de Guelph étaient aussi impliqués, tout comme la Police provinciale.

Rassurer les citoyens

Les policiers veulent par ailleurs rassurer les communautés là où ont eu lieu les descentes.

Des agents seront sur la rue Dixon notamment, dans le nord-ouest de la ville, dans les jours à venir. Selon Bill Blair, ce quartier est plus sécuritaire maintenant que des arrestations ont eu lieu.
