PARIS - Des dizaines de milliers de personnes ont pris d'assaut dimanche les rues de Paris afin de protester contre l'adoption imminente d'un projet de loi légalisant le mariage gai en France.

Permettre aux couples du même sexe de convoler était l'une des promesses électorales du président François Hollande. Les sondages montrent qu'une mince majorité de Français sont en faveur de ce type d'union, mais que le soutien au mariage homosexuel tend à baisser lorsqu'on y ajoute la question de l'adoption et de la reproduction.

Alors que le projet de loi poursuit son chemin à l'Assemblée nationale, l'opposition a gagné en importance, particulièrement du côté des groupes conservateurs provenant des régions rurales. Les manifestations contre le mariage gai sont toutefois demeurées essentiellement pacifiques, même si quelques actes de violence ont éclaté en marge des rassemblements.

Dimanche, les manifestants ont traversé la Rive gauche pour se rendre sur la vaste esplanade des Invalides sous haute surveillance policière. Les partisans du mariage homosexuel ont répliqué avec leur propre manifestation de l'autre côté de la Seine, sur la place de la Bastille.

Les deux chambres de l'Assemblée nationale ont déjà approuvé le projet de loi en première lecture. La deuxième et dernière lecture devrait se dérouler mardi.
