• Coconut oil has gotten a bad rap for being a highly saturated fat, but you might want to reconsider. Many experts say that when consumed in moderation, coconut oil has potential for many amazing — and surprising — health benefits.

  • Lowers Cholesterol

Coconut oil contains a saturated fat called lauric acid, a type of medium chain triglyceride (MCT). According to medical experts at Dr. Oz, lauric acid increases the good HDL cholesterol in the blood to help improve cholesterol ratio levels. "Coconut oil lowers cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need," notes the show.

  • Versatile Immunity Booster

Like apples, coconut oil is rich in anti-oxidants and is said to boost your body's immunity. According to HuffPost blogger Dr. Joseph Mercola, studies dating back to the 1930s show that South Pacific Islanders whose diets were high in coconut oil were virtually free of heart disease. Still, there's limited evidence to back up all the claims about coconut oil's seemingly miraculous powers against viruses, kidney stones, certain cancers and even Alzheimer's disease.

  • Weight Loss

When coconut oil's MCTs break down, these special healthy fats in the liver lead to efficient burning of energy and an increased metabolism. They may also positively affect hormones for thyroid and blood sugar levels. The health experts at Dr. Oz cited a 2009 study that found that women who consumed about two tablespoons of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks had lowered their abdominal fat, one of the hardest places in the body to shed extra pounds.

  • Skin and Hair Care

Coconut oil — preferably organic — absorbs into the skin easily, making it a great non-greasy moisturizer, conditioner and anti-aging cream, according to . Besides massage oil, you can make homemade body scrubs, conditioner, or even shaving cream with it. Some people claim coconut oil can also be used to treat sunburns, acne, and other skin ailments.

  • Stress Relief

The scent of coconut oil can be very soothing, and makes a perfect massage oil, especially when used on your temples, scalp and neck.
