Le gouvernement canadien a demandé à ses ressortissants de quitter immédiatement Benghazi, en Libye, en raison d'une menace imminente qui pèserait sur les Occidentaux.

Auparavant, le Royaume-Uni, l'Allemagne et les Pays-Bas ont lancé le même appel à leurs ressortissants.

Le ministère britannique des Affaires étrangères déconseille toute visite à Benghazi depuis le mois de septembre, mais il a déclaré jeudi être au fait d'une menace spécifique et imminente. Il a refusé toutefois de dévoiler la nature exacte de la menace.

L'avertissement a été le même du côté allemand, tandis que les Pays-Bas ont plutôt indiqué qu'il « n'était pas avisé de demeurer dans ce secteur ».

Le 11 septembre dernier, un assaut contre le consulat de Benghazi avait coûté la vie à l'ambassadeur américain en Libye et à trois autres Américains.

La semaine dernière, Ottawa avait recommandé d'éviter tout voyage à Benghazi, à Beni Oualid et dans les régions de Sabha et de Kufra en raison de l'instabilité politique dans la région.

La ville de Benghazi est un centre d'affaires où plusieurs entreprises emploient des Occidentaux. C'est dans cette ville de 1 million d'habitants que la révolte contre le défunt dictateur Mouammar Kadhafi a commencé, en 2011.
