TORONTO - Les amateurs de sports de Toronto ont savouré un rare plaisir: un défilé saluant un championnat dans les rues du centre-ville.

Les Argonauts sont arrivés au carré Nathan Phillips à l'extérieur de l'hôtel de ville de Toronto pour célébrer leur victoire de 35-22 contre les Stampeders de Calgary dans la 100e édition du match de championnat de la LCF.

Des milliers d'amateurs enthousiastes ont envahi le site, plusieurs brandissant des drapeaux des Argonauts ou des serviettes blanches et faisant résonner des cornes.

«Nous allons nous battre pour nous assurer de ramener cette coupe dans cette ville pendant de nombreuses années à venir», a déclaré le chef de la direction des Argos, Chris Rudge.

La foule a manifesté bruyamment quand le capitaine défensif Jordan Younger a porté la coupe Grey sur scène.

«La LCF est bien vivante ici à Toronto, a déclaré le directeur général des Argos, Jim Barker. Ç'a été spectaculaire. De voir tous ces gens ici, c'est ahurissant.»

L'équipe a amorcé la journée en défilant avec le trophée emblématique à travers les rues de Toronto peu avant midi. La procession a commencé près de la gare Union et a remonté la rue Bay jusqu'à l'hôtel de ville. Le maire Rob Ford, vêtu d'un chandail des Argos avec le no 1, a proclamé «la journée des Argonauts de Toronto.»

«C'est ce qu'on appelle un rêve devenu réalité. Nous avions dit qu'ils pouvaient le faire et ils l'ont fait», a déclaré Ford, qui a été accueilli avec un mélange de huées et d'applaudissements au lendemain de sa destitution ordonnée par un juge en raison d'un conflit d'intérêts.

Il a eu droit à une meilleure réception lorsque le plaqueur défensif Adriano Belli lui a fait un bisou sur la joue.

Une flotte de 28 camions et un cabriolet ont transporté le quart Ricky Ray, le porteur de ballon et joueur par excellence Chad Kackert, le receveur Chad Owens et les autres joueurs le long du parcours du défilé.

C'est le premier défilé de championnat à Toronto depuis la victoire des Argonauts à la Coupe Grey 2004.

Les amateurs de sports de la ville n'ont pas été gâtés au fil des ans.

Les Blue Jays au baseball n'ont pas gagné un championnat depuis 1993, les Maple Leafs au hockey n'ont plus remporté un titre depuis 1967 et les Raptors au basketball et le FC Toronto au soccer ne sont même jamais passés près d'être couronnés.
