GAZA - Aujourd'hui Premier ministre sans rival, Benjamin Netanyahu a pris le risque de lancer contre les Palestiniens de Gaza une vaste opération militaire, pour la première fois de sa carrière, à quelques semaines d'élections cruciales en Israël.

"Bibi" Netanyahu a donné son feu vert à une frappe ciblée contre le chef militaire du Hamas, Ahmad Jaabari, tué mercredi 14 novembre à Gaza, et à l'offensive "Pilier de défense" contre les groupes armées de l'enclave palestinienne, en dépit du danger de confrontation majeure.

"En fait, Netanyahu veut gagner les prochaines élections et il peut se présenter devant l'électorat en disant 'J'ai tué Jaabari, l'ennemi numéro un d'Israël, le commandant du Hamas'", explique Moukhaïmer Abou Saada, professeur de science politique à l'Université Al-Azhar de Gaza. "C'est exactement comme (le président américain Barack) Obama en campagne, répétant aux électeurs américains qu'il a tué Oussama Ben Laden", souligne le politologue.

Image de dirigeant à poigne

Le champion incontesté de la droite israélienne, déjà Premier ministre en 1996-1999 lors d'un mandat controversé, s'est façonné une image de dirigeant à poigne, convaincu que "la force" empêche la guerre. Début novembre, Benjamin Netanyahu s'est encore déclaré à la télévision "prêt, s'il le faut" à déclencher une attaque contre les sites nucléaires iraniens.

Cette interview avait été diffusée à la veille de l'élection présidentielle aux Etats-Unis, alors que Benjamin Netanyahu a pressé --en vain-- ces dernières semaines l'administration Obama de fixer une "ligne rouge" au régime de Téhéran afin d'empêcher l'Iran de se doter de l'arme nucléaire.

Pourtant, paradoxalement, le Premier ministre s'est félicité le mois dernier devant le Parlement qu'aucune "guerre inutile" n'ait été menée pendant ses sept années au pouvoir. "Il n'y a pas eu de guerre parce que nous avons projeté de la force", s'est-il flatté.

Ces remarques visaient son prédécesseur Ehud Olmert, qui a orchestré en 2006 une guerre à moitié ratée contre le Hezbollah chiite libanais, qui a fait plus de 1.200 morts au Liban, en majorité des civils, et 160 tués en Israël, pour la plupart soldats.

C'est le même Ehud Olmert qui, six semaines avant des élections, avait déclenché l'opération "Plomb durci", offensive dévastatrice contre Gaza qui, du 27 décembre 2008 au 18 janvier 2009, avait coûté la vie à 1.440 Palestiniens et 13 Israéliens.

Popularité inégalée

Quatre ans après, Bibi Netanyahu, qui vient de fêter son 63e anniversaire, se trouve à son tour sur la ligne de front dans le sud d'Israël. Il a beau être détesté par la plupart des médias israéliens -"le plus mécanique, 'télé-prompté' et fabriqué des Premiers ministres d'Israël", selon le Haaretz-, il jouit d'une popularité inégalée trois ans après son retour au pouvoir.

Mais il est critiqué pour son caractère indécis et ses talents d'"illusionniste" prêt à céder sous la pression. Il est pragmatique, répondent ses partisans.

Evoquant l'intention prêtée au Premier ministre d'attaquer l'Iran, l'ex-patron de la Sécurité intérieure (Shin Beth), Youval Diskin, a fustigé "un leadership qui prend des décisions basées sur des illusions messianiques".

L'éditorialiste Shalom Yerushalmi a relevé dans le quotidien Maariv que Benjamin Netanyahu et son ministre de la Défense Ehud Barak pouvaient "remporter maintenant une belle victoire, pas seulement sécuritaire mais aussi électorale".

"Mais on ne peut qu'espérer que leur chemin, qui a commencé de façon responsable, ne nous entraînera pas dans des voies aventureuses avant les élections, car les dirigeants aussi en paieraient un prix élevé", a-t-il prévenu.
