WASHINGTON, 14 nov 2012 (AFP) - Le président des Etats-Unis Barack Obama a parlé mercredi au Premier ministre israélien Benjamin Netanyahu et au président égyptien Mohamed Morsi et leur a signifié à tous deux la nécessité d'une "désescalade" de la violence à Gaza, a annoncé la Maison Blanche.

M. Obama a appelé M. Netanyahu à faire "tous les efforts possibles pour éviter des victimes civiles" mais a soutenu le droit d'Israël à se défendre contre les attaques du Hamas, a précisé la présidence américaine dans un communiqué, après l'élimination par l'Etat hébreu du chef militaire du mouvement islamiste.

Lors de sa conversation avec le Premier ministre israélien, le dirigeant américain a répété "le soutien des Etats-Unis au droit d'Israël à se défendre contre les tirs nourris de roquettes tirées de Gaza contre des civils israéliens", selon la même source.

MM. Obama et Netanyahu "sont d'accord sur le fait que le Hamas doit cesser ses attaques contre Israël pour permettre une désescalade de la situation", a encore indiqué la présidence américaine.

Avec M. Morsi, président issu de la mouvance des Frères musulmans proche du Hamas, M. Obama a "condamné les tirs de roquettes de Gaza contre Israël et a une nouvelle fois insisté sur le droit d'Israël à se défendre", de même source.

"Les deux dirigeants se sont mis d'accord sur la nécessité de travailler afin de parvenir à une désescalade de la situation aussi vite que possible", a encore assuré la Maison Blanche.

Réunion d'urgence du Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU

Le Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies doit tenir mercredi soir une réunion d'urgence pour discuter des tensions grandissantes entre Israël et Palestiniens dans la Bande de Gaza, a-t-on appris auprès de diplomates.

La réunion à huis clos débutera à 21H00 (02H00 GMT) avec des représentants des délégations israélienne et palestinienne, selon ces diplomates.

L'Egypte avait demandé cette réunion après une vingtaine de raids israéliens sur la bande de Gaza dans lesquels le chef militaire du Hamas a été tué. Le représentant palestinien auprès de l'ONU a affirmé que 9 personnes au moins avaient été tuées.
