Un nouveau président est élu en Somalie

MOGADISCIO, Somalie - Hassan Sheikh Mohamud a été élu lundi président de la Somalie, un pays ravagé par la guerre civile qui n'a pas connu de réel pouvoir central depuis plus de vingt ans.

Les membres de la communauté internationale estiment qu'il s'agit d'un pas important pour cette nation africaine, qui doit opérer une transition d'envergure afin de mettre en place un gouvernement efficace.

Le nouveau président, un universitaire, a défait le président sortant, Sheik Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, par un compte de 190 voix contre 79, selon le président du Parlement, Mohamed Osman Jawari.

Son adversaire a rapidement concédé sa défaite. Sheik Sharif Sheikh Ahmed s'est dit «heureux de voir la première élection libre et équitable se dérouler en Somalie après 40 ans» et a félicité le nouveau président.

L'an dernier, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud avait fondé un nouveau parti politique somalien appelé Paix et développement.

Plusieurs candidats à la présidence — dont le président sortant, le premier ministre Abdiweli Mohamed Ali et le président du Parlement Sharif Hassan Cheikh Aden — étaient issus d'un gouvernement de transition accusé de nombreuses fois de corruption ou de malversations.
