OTTAWA - La Banque du Canada s'est excusée pour la manière dont a été retirée de la première version des nouveaux billets de 100 $ l'image d'une femme d'apparence asiatique.

Dans un communiqué diffusé lundi, le gouverneur de la banque centrale, Mark Carney, a présenté ses excuses à toutes les personnes qui ont été offensées.

Il a ajouté que la façon dont la banque a traité cette question n'a pas satisfait aux normes que les Canadiens attendent d'elle.

La banque centrale s'est retrouvée sous les feux des projecteurs, la semaine dernière, quand La Presse Canadienne a révélé que l'image d'une femme d'apparence asiatique avait été retirée du billet de banque, après les réactions négatives de certains groupes de consultation.

Cette image a été remplacée par celle d'une femme caucasienne.

Une porte-parole du Conseil national des Chinois canadiens a estimé que cette décision était raciste et demandé à la Banque du Canada de revoir ses politiques.
